Philippe Delorme, Executive Vice-President, Strategy & Innovation, Schneider Electric, commented: “Our quarterly extra-financial performance has improved significantly in the third quarter of 2012. The Group’s continued efforts in terms of sustainable development have been rewarded, as can be seen by Schneider Electric’s progress, for another year, in the ethical stock market index Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), both in the Europe and World indexes, and its retention in the performance index of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

The Barometer’s performance this quarter allows us to consider a surpassing of our end-of-year objective, set at 3.85/10. We must nonetheless remain cautious due to the volatility of indicators from one quarter to another.”

This quarter, five indicators have boosted the Group’s performance: a reduction of 4% in CO2 emissions used in transport, growth in sales made through our EcoXpert partners 11 points higher than that of the Group, 28% decrease in medical incidents on our sites since the start of the year, the proportion of women in our talent pool reaching 25.3% and a number of households at the Base of the Pyramid having access to energy thanks to Schneider Electric solutions, taking the figure to more than 260,000. Four indicators are still being rolled out². Also, some indicators are subject to volatility from one quarter to another.

    Results by indicators category

    • Planet, measuring Schneider Electric’s environmental performance

The progress of the Planet indicators this quarter is mainly driven by the Carbon indicator. In the third quarter 2012, transportation-related CO2 emissions decreased by 4.01%. These results mainly come from a 22% reduction in CO2 emissions for long-distance freight (air and sea), continuing the 13% decrease in the second half of the year. The Products and solutions indicator is rising again with 63.1% of sales made from Green Premium™ products in the third quarter. From 2013, the group’s energy use reduction indicator will be calculated using Schneider Electric’s software applications StruxureWare™ Resource Advisor and StruxureWare™ Energy Operations on the Group’s own sites, already rolled out on 100 sites.

    • Profit, measuring Schneider Electric’s ability to ensure steady, responsible economic growth while offering products and services that have minimal impact on the environment

This set of indicators demonstrates excellent overall performance. The growth in sales made through EcoXperts has risen significantly this quarter, by 11 points more than the Group’s growth. However, this indicator is subject to a great deal of volatility and one quarter’s performance is no guarantee of similar results in the next one. The Access to energy indicator shows rapid growth in the third quarter with 260,694 households connected to the grid, mainly due to the rolling out of prepayment and electrification offers in India and Africa. Lastly, Schneider Electric’s place has been confirmed in the three ethical stock market indices targeted by the barometer, especially with its inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability European and World indices, whose results for the 2012-2013 period were announced in September.

    • People, measuring Schneider Electric’s main commitments to its employees’ well-being and to local communities in countries where the Group operates

This quarter, the People indicators’ performance is mostly driven by Safety. The Medical Incident Rate has fallen by 28% thanks to a range of actions: OHSAS³ certification of industrial sites, site audits, continuous training and the drafting of Safety directives. In particular, an online training module on the risks of falling has been rolled out, aimed at Global Supply Chain. The Access to energy and Diversity indicators have picked up this quarter, with 5,344 people at the Base of the Pyramid trained in energy management and 25.3% women in the talent pool. The Engagement indicator is stable with a consistently high score of 54% on the employee engagement index. The Communities indicator records 54 missions achieved with the Schneider Electric Teachers NGO since the start of the year, in line with expectations for this programme launched in February 2012.

On 10 October 2012, Schneider Electric won the Cercle Humania’s CSR Innovation Award for the Planet & Society Barometer. This prize rewards the efficiency demonstrated by the Barometer in driving forward the company’s sustainable development policy. It was awarded by Francis Mer, Vice-Chairman of the Safran Group and former Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry. The Cercle Humania, under the aegis of Apec and Kurt Salmon, offers a discussion forum for large private and public organisations on subjects relating to human resources and CSR.

On 13 September 2012, Ipreo, a provider of financial market data, published a study of the most attractive companies for Socially Responsible Investors*. This study shows that as at summer 2012 Schneider Electric is the fifth international group, and the first French company, most likely to appear in SRI (Socially Responsible Investing) funds. In total, 166 SRI funds choose the Group, representing approximately 4% of its market capitalisation.

From 14 to 30 September 2012, the Solar Decathlon Europe university competition pitted 20 student teams from 15 different countries against one another. Schneider Electric was one of the event’s main sponsors. The challenge for participating universities consisted of designing and building a house using only the sun as a source of energy. The French Team Rhône-Alpes, sponsored by Schneider Electric, lifted the trophy for the 2012 Solar Decathlon competition. Their project, dubbed Canopea®, consisted of a collection of small local buildings called “Home-towers”, having taken its inspiration from the top layer of the forest - the canopy - capturing 95% solar energy and 30% rainfall.
